Nanjing Audit University is the only full-time undergraduate college named after "auditing", and is one of the birthplaces of auditing higher education in China. The school was founded in 1983, renamed Nanjing Audit Institute in 1987, merged into the former Nanjing Financial College in 2002, passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education in 2007 with the "excellent" grade, was approved as the first batch of audit master's professional degree authorization units in 2011, became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, the Audit Office and Jiangsu Province in 2011, and was approved as a master's degree (academic degree) authorization unit in 2013. In 2015, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name to Nanjing Audit University.

The university has 20 professional schools (teaching departments) such as the School of International Audit and the School of Accounting, and 5 characteristic colleges (research institutes) such as the School of Government Audit and the Institute of Audit and Evaluation. There are 33 undergraduate majors. The university has 2 philosophical and social science research bases in Jiangsu Province, such as "Modern Audit Development Research Center" and "Financial Risk Management Research Center", 1 Jiangsu Provincial University Collaborative Innovation Center (Cultivation Point) of "Audit Information Engineering and Technology", and 3 provincial key laboratories such as "Public Works Audit", "Audit Information Engineering" and "Financial Engineering". In the past five years, the university has presided over 82 projects of the National Social Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including major bidding projects of the National Social Science Fund, and 156 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and participated in the construction of important policies and laws and regulations of the Audit Commission, as well as the research of major theoretical topics. He has published 207 papers in authoritative journals such as Journal of Business Ethics, Energy Economics, and Economic Research, 1585 papers in CSSCI/CSCD and above journals, published 122 academic monographs, and won 42 scientific research achievement awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the first prize of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education and the first prize of the Outstanding Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Jiangsu Province.

The "Audit and Economic Research" sponsored by the university is a national Chinese core journal, a CSSCI source journal, a RCCSE China core academic journal, a national university "fine social science journal", and an important reprint source journal for copying newspapers and periodicals of the National People's Congress. Journal of Nanjing Audit University is an "Excellent Social Science Journal" in National Universities and a Core Academic Journal of RCCSE in China (Extended Edition).

The school actively promotes the internationalization of education. It has established extensive cooperative relations with international industry organizations such as INTOSAI, ASOSAI, IIA, Supreme Audit Institutions and universities in more than a dozen countries and regions such as the United States and France. The university has been certified by the IIA as the only "Internal Audit Education Partner" (IAEP) cooperative university in China, and has carried out student exchanges, faculty mutual employment, credit recognition, and scientific research cooperation with partner universities around the world.
