Fudan University was founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School and renamed Fudan University in 1917. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine, founded in 1927, renamed Shanghai Medical College in 1932, and renamed Shanghai Medical University in 1985. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form the new Fudan University, which further broadened the discipline pattern and strengthened the strength of the university, and has developed into a comprehensive research university with 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art.
At present, Fudan University has 32 directly affiliated colleges (departments) and 16 affiliated hospitals (of which 5 are under construction). The university has 70 undergraduate majors, 35 first-level discipline doctoral degree programs, 41 first-level discipline master's degree programs, 2 doctoral degree programs, 27 master's degree programs, and 35 postdoctoral research stations. There are 12,881 undergraduate and junior college students, 16,929 graduate students, and 3,043 international students. There are 2,799 teaching and research personnel. It has 42 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 118 of the Central "Thousand Talents Program", 133 "Changjiang Scholars" of the Ministry of Education, 34 chief scientists of the "National Key Basic Research and Development Program (including major scientific research programs)", 97 "National Outstanding Young Scholars", 1 outstanding professor of liberal arts, and 11 senior professors of liberal arts.
17 subject areas of the university are in the top 1% of ESI, among which chemistry, materials science, and clinical medicine are in the top 1‰ of the world. The university has 11 national key disciplines of first-level disciplines, 19 national key disciplines of second-level disciplines, and 7 peak disciplines of class I and II in Shanghai. There are 5 State Key Laboratories, 5 Engineering Research Centers of the Ministry of Education, 13 Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 9 Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Health, 1 Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Health of the General Logistics Department, 15 Shanghai Key Laboratories, and 4 Shanghai Engineering Research Centers. There are 9 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, the China Research Institute was selected as the first batch of national high-end think tank construction pilot units, the School of Marxism was selected as the first batch of national key Marxist colleges, and the secretariat of the "Chinese University Think Tank Forum" was settled in Fudan. The university ranks 43rd and 96th in the world in the latest rankings of QS AND U.S. News World University Rankings, respectively, and ranks third among domestic universities.
The university has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 200 top universities and research institutions around the world, and nearly 50% of undergraduate students are on overseas exchanges. The school has signed strategic cooperation agreements with 28 local governments and more than 10 enterprises and institutions.
The school has formed a campus pattern of "one body and two wings": that is, the Handan campus and Jiangwan campus are integrated, and the Fenglin campus and Zhangjiang campus are the two wings. It covers an area of 2,449,900 square meters, and the school building area is 2,002,000 square meters.
