Xi'an Jiaotong University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. Its predecessor was Nanyang Public School, which was founded in Shanghai in 1896, renamed Jiaotong University in 1921, and in 1956, the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an, and in 1959, it was named Xi'an Jiaotong University, and was listed as a national key university. Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the first batch of key construction projects in the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan", and is the first batch to enter the national "211" and "985" project construction, and has been identified by the state as a school with the goal of building a world-renowned high-level university.
