History of the school

City University of Hong Kong, formerly known as City Polytechnic, was established in Mong Kok, Kowloon in 1984 under the City Polytechnic Ordinance, Chapter 1132 of the Laws of Hong Kong. The earliest school building was located in the Trade and Industry Department Building in present-day Mong Kok. Eight years later, after the completion of the permanent campus at Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, the new campus was moved into the new campus in 1990 and the original campus was transferred to the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong for campus use. The school has been granted land by the government to use the site of the temporary housing area of Yuen Ge and Lao Cai as the site for the future student dormitory. In 1995, the university was granted self-accrediting status by the government and renamed as "City University of Hong Kong". In 1997, the Kowloon Bay branch was established on the site of the former Wellington College to provide a special venue for self-financing Associate Degree, YPTP and Yijin students.

In June 1982, the Council of the Hong Kong Polytechnic was appointed as a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Second Polytechnic and Sir Chung Sze-yuen was appointed as the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee.

In May 1982, the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee held its first meeting in London and subsequently submitted its Report No. 1 of Polytechnic No. 2, recommending that the new Polytechnic be named "City Polytechnic of Hong Kong" and that the site of the new Polytechnic should be built on a land of about 12 hectares in Kowloon Tong in a densely populated area with accessible major transportation networks. At the same time, the Committee decided that classes should commence in the temporary school premises in 1984–85 as soon as possible, pending the completion of the permanent school premises.

The recruitment of the first Dean was launched globally in early 1983 with the appointment of Professor David Johns, Provost and Vice-Chancellor of the Loughborough University of Technology in the United Kingdom.
