Northeast Agricultural University is a national "211 Project" key construction university with "agricultural science as the advantage, life science and food science as the characteristics, and coordinated development of agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management and other disciplines".
Founded in Harbin in 1948, the school was originally known as Northeast Agricultural College, which was the first ordinary higher agricultural college founded by the Communist Party of China in the liberated area, and Liu Da, a well-known educator and the first mayor of Harbin, was the first president of the school. Since its establishment, it has been subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Northeast Administrative Committee, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Commission, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education, and was identified as a provincial key college in Heilongjiang Province in 1981, and merged with the Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Management Cadre College in 1994 to form Northeast Agricultural University.
The school has 17 faculties and 1 teaching department. At present, there are 3 national key disciplines, 3 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 2 key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture, 2 provincial key discipline groups, 10 provincial first-level key disciplines, and the discipline of agricultural science has entered the top 1% of the ESI international discipline rankings. At present, there are 9 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees and 20 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees. 1 doctoral professional degree authorization category, 7 master's professional degree authorization categories; 10 post-doctoral research stations and 2 post-doctoral research stations; 75 undergraduate majors.
The university has 28 671 full-time students, including 3 605 graduate students, 24 841 undergraduates, and 225 foreign students. It has 10 national-level characteristic majors, 2 national-level talent training model innovation experimental areas, 4 national-level high-quality courses, 3 national-level high-quality video open courses, 2 national-level high-quality resource sharing courses, 3 national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 national-level off-campus practical education bases for college students, 4 agricultural science and education cooperation talent training bases of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, 1 innovative talent training base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 1 national science and technology entrepreneurship practice base for college students. The school is a national modern distance education pilot college, and has a national key construction vocational education teacher training base. The school is a typical experience university for graduate employment in China. Since its establishment, the school has cultivated more than 200,000 students at all levels, including a group of "innovative" talents who stand at the forefront of science and technology in the world, a group of "compound" talents all over the country, and a large number of "application-oriented" talents who are active in Heilongjiang Province and the front line of agricultural production in the country.
The university adheres to the principle of openness, has the qualification to accept Chinese government scholarships to study in China, has a training base for studying in Russia by the Ministry of Education, and is the Chinese secretariat unit of the Forum of University Presidents of Northeast China and the Russian Far East and Siberia. Since its establishment, the university has established contacts with more than 60 universities and scientific research units in Russia, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland and other countries, carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and initially formed the international exchange characteristics of "focusing on Northeast Asia and learning from others' strengths".
