Yunnan University was founded in 1923 as a private Donglu University, renamed as Provincial Yunnan University in 1934, and changed to National Yunnan University in 1938. In 1937, Xiong Qinglai, a famous mathematician and educator, became the president, and a large number of famous scholars were hired to teach at the university, laying a high foundation for the development of the university and a profound academic heritage, and creating the first glorious period in the history of Yunnan University. In the 40s of the 20th century, Yunnan University has developed into one of the famous Chinese universities with a large scale and international influence, including literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and other disciplines. In 1946, the Encyclopædia Britannica listed Yunnan University as one of the 15 world-famous universities in China.
In the 50s, the faculties were adjusted, and some important and distinctive departments of Yunnan University, such as aviation, civil engineering, law, and railways, were divided and merged into Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, Sichuan University, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Changsha Railway Institute and other universities. Engineering, medicine, agriculture and other independent schools have been established successively, and gradually developed into today's Kunming University of Science and Technology, Kunming Medical University, Yunnan Agricultural University, Southwest Forestry University and other universities. In 1958, Yunnan University was delegated to Yunnan Province by the Ministry of Higher Education of the Central Committee. In 1978, Yunnan University was identified by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities in China.
After the reform and opening up, Yunnan University has made great progress. In 1996, it was included in the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities, in 2001 it was included in the key construction colleges and universities of the western development, in 2004 it became a key university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Yunnan Province, in 2006, a total of 19 secondary indicators of undergraduate teaching level evaluation were all rated as A, and it was rated as an excellent school for undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education, and in 2012, it became the implementation of the national "Basic Capacity Building Project of Colleges and Universities in the Central and Western Regions" and the "Comprehensive Strength Project of Colleges and Universities in the Central and Western Regions".
