Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a public innovative university with a high starting point and high positioning established by Shenzhen under the macro background of China's higher education reform and development.
SUSTech has been identified as a national pilot university for comprehensive reform of higher education. In April 2012, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the university, and entrusted the university with the important mission of exploring a modern university system with Chinese characteristics and exploring an innovative talent training model.
SUSTech draws on the discipline setting and school-running model of world-class science and engineering universities, focusing on science and engineering disciplines, with both medicine and characteristic humanities and social sciences, running schools at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels, and carrying out research in a series of new disciplines, so that the university has become a think tank leading social development and a source of new knowledge and technology.

As a start-up university, the university draws on the discipline setting and school-running model of world-class science and engineering universities, and faces the major needs of the development of strategic emerging industries in the country and the Pearl River Delta region. At present, the university has established 14 departments, namely the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Biology, the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Finance, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, the Department of Marine Science and Engineering, the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. A total of 22 undergraduate majors are offered, including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, Communication Engineering, Optoelectronic Science and Engineering, Information Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Finance, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Computer Science and Technology. In the next five years, the university will gradually establish the faculties of science, engineering, life and health, business, humanities and social sciences, each of which will have a number of departments and about 26 research centers through interdisciplinary interdisciplinarity.
SUSTech has initially built an international high-level faculty team. As of May 2017, SUSTech has contracted to introduce about 300 teachers, of which more than 90% have overseas work experience, and more than 60% have the experience of working or studying in the world's top 100 universities. Among them, there are 16 academicians, 43 winners of the National "Thousand Talents Program", 12 "Changjiang Scholars" of the Ministry of Education, 14 winners of the "National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund", and 61 winners of the "Youth Thousand Talents Program".
The school strives to establish a diversified admission mechanism and an advanced comprehensive education system that is conducive to educational fairness and the selection of innovative talents. The school took the lead in reforming the enrollment system and adopted the "comprehensive evaluation admission model based on the college entrance examination" to recruit outstanding students. The school takes "credit system, college system, tutor system" and "internationalization, personalization, and elitism" as the core and characteristics, and vigorously cultivates top-notch innovative talents. The school adopts the college system for management, and currently has a total of 6 colleges: Zhiren, Shuren, Zhicheng, Shude, Zhixin, and Shuli. In September 2016, there were 3,228 students, including 2,927 undergraduates, 7 international students, 164 master's students, and 130 doctoral students. By 2020, the university will have 8,000 students, including 4,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students. More than 60% of the graduates of the first two batches were admitted to world-renowned universities, and the vast majority of them entered doctoral studies, reflecting the quality of talent training in the school.
SUSTech explores the establishment of a modern university system with Chinese characteristics, follows the principles of board governance, professor governance, and academic autonomy, and implements the president responsibility system under the leadership of the party committee. In May 2011, the Shenzhen Municipal Government promulgated the Interim Measures for the Administration of Southern University of Science and Technology to ensure that Southern University of Science and Technology operates its own schools in accordance with the law in the form of "one school, one law".
The university has set up a board of directors, a party committee, a president's office and an academic committee, and established a professor committee and an advisory committee. The Council is the decision-making body of the school, which is composed of government representatives, representatives of the school management team and faculty members, as well as celebrities in the community. As an advisory body, the Advisory Board invites world-class scholars as members to provide suggestions for the development of the university.
Southern University of Science and Technology is located in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, with a campus area of 1,943,800 square meters and a planned total construction area of more than 700,000 square meters, which will be constructed in two phases.
The construction area of 32 main buildings and supporting projects in the first phase of the project is 202,600 square meters, including various functional buildings and facilities such as teaching, scientific research, office, sports, and living, to meet the construction needs of 2,100 students. The planned construction area of the second phase of the campus project is about 500,000 square meters, which will meet the needs of 8,000 students.
The new campus has a beautiful environment and convenient transportation, with picturesque scenery in the nine mountains and rivers on the campus. The building embodies the concept of "heavy, energy-saving, practical and environmentally friendly", and has become a model of green building and ecological campus, based on the establishment of one of the most beautiful university campuses in China.
