Beijing Institute of Technology was founded in 1940, formerly known as Yan'an Academy of Natural Sciences, is the first science and engineering university founded by the Communist Party of China. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the university has been a batch of key universities in the country, and the first batch of universities to enter the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" construction ranks; In the QS "Top 500 World Universities" with extensive influence in the world, it ranked 15th among the selected universities in Chinese mainland. The school is now under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In 1949, the school moved to Beijing; In 1952, the school was renamed Beijing Institute of Technology, becoming the first national defense industry college in New China. In 1988, the school was renamed Beijing Institute of Technology.
