Xiamen University, referred to as Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by Mr. Chen Jiageng, a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in the history of modern education in China, and is also a high-level university under the national "211 Project" and "985 Project".
Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the school motto of "unremitting self-improvement, stopping at perfection", accumulated rich experience in running a school, formed a distinctive school-running characteristics, and has become a comprehensive university with a complete range of disciplines, strong faculty, first-class in China, and extensive influence in the world. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 300,000 undergraduate and graduate students for the country, and more than 60 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have studied and worked in Xiamen University.
The university has a graduate school, 6 faculties, 28 colleges (including 76 departments) and 14 research institutes, forming a complete discipline system including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and technical sciences, management sciences, art sciences, medical sciences and other disciplines. At present, 11 disciplines of the university have entered the top 1% of ESI in the world, and have 5 national key disciplines of first-level disciplines, 9 national key disciplines of second-level disciplines, 17 first-level disciplines of Fujian Province, 46 key disciplines of first-level disciplines of Fujian Province, and 9 national basic science talent training bases. At present, there are nearly 40,000 students (including 1,196 international students with foreign degrees), including 19,782 undergraduates, 16,390 master's students, and 3,229 doctoral students, with a ratio of about 1:1. The school has won 3 first prizes and 17 second prizes of the 5th, 6th and 7th National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, ranking among the top universities in the country. 30 courses have been selected as national "excellent courses" and 6 national experimental teaching demonstration centers; 12 papers were selected as "National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations". Xiamen University National University Science and Technology Park is one of the only two national university science and technology parks in Fujian Province recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the university's natural science research strength has been greatly improved, and more than 50 papers have been published in international high-level academic journals such as Science, Nature, Cell and its sub-journals. The 10th Congress of the Communist Party of China Xiamen University set the overall strategic goal of Xiamen University's development in the coming period: to build a world-renowned high-level research university in an all-round way by the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university, and to rank among the world's first-class universities by the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. At present, Xiamen University is striding towards the established goal.
