Nankai University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the alma mater of the respected Premier Zhou Enlai. Nankai University was founded by Yan Xiu and Zhang Boling in 1904 and in 1919. In 1937, the campus was bombed by the invading Japanese army, and the school moved south. In 1938, it merged with Peking University and Tsinghua University to form Southwest Associated University, known as "Beichen University". In 1946, it was re-established in Tianjin and changed to a national state. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it underwent the adjustment of higher education faculties and became a national key university with equal emphasis on arts and sciences. Since the reform and opening up, Tianjin Institute of Foreign Trade and China Tourism Management Cadre College have been merged into the university, and with the support of the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipality, the school has developed into a comprehensive research university under the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". After the completion and opening of the new campus in September 2015, Nankai University initially formed a "one school and three districts" school-running pattern of Balitai Campus, Jinnan Campus and TEDA College.
