Central South University was established in April 2000 by the merger of the former Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology. The predecessor of the former Central South University of Technology was the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, which was founded in 1952, and the predecessor of the former Changsha Railway College was the Central South College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, which was founded in 1953. The predecessor of the former Hunan Medical University, known as Xiangya Medical College, was founded in 1914 and was one of the earliest Western medical colleges and universities in China.
