Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, which was established on May 26, 2000 by the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan University of Urban Construction, and is one of the first universities to be included in the national "211 Project" and the national "985 Project".
The campus covers an area of more than 7,000 acres, with lush trees, green grass, elegant environment, beautiful scenery, and a green coverage rate of 72%, known as the "forest university". The school has a complete teaching and scientific research support system and various public service facilities.
The school has a complete range of disciplines and a reasonable structure, and has basically built a comprehensive and research-oriented university discipline system. It has 10 university disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. It has 97 undergraduate majors, 214 master's degree programs, 183 doctoral degree programs, and 39 postdoctoral research stations. At present, there are 7 national key disciplines of first-level disciplines, 15 national key disciplines of second-level disciplines (internal medicine and surgery are classified as level 3), and 7 national key (cultivation) disciplines. In the third round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 3 first-level disciplines ranked first in China, 5 first-level disciplines ranked in the top 3 in China, 8 first-level disciplines ranked in the top 5 in China, and 17 first-level disciplines ranked in the top 10 in China.
The school implements the strategy of "rejuvenating the school with talents" and has strong teachers. There are more than 3,000 full-time teachers, including more than 1,000 professors and more than 1,300 associate professors. Among the teachers, there are 15 academicians, 36 winners of the "Thousand Talents Program", 5 winners of the "Thousand Talents Program for Foreign Experts", 83 candidates of the "Thousand Talents Program for Young Scholars", 50 Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, 39 chair professors, 61 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 15 chief scientists of the "973 Program", 2 chief scientists of major scientific research projects, 3 young scientists of the 973 Program (including major scientific research programs), and 35 winners of the Outstanding Young Scientists Science Fund. There are 224 winners of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, 39 winners of the National Millions of Talents Project, and 9 national famous teachers.
The school implements the educational idea of building a "university for students, scholars and academics", adheres to the school-running philosophy of "education-oriented, innovation is the soul, and responsibility is the action", adheres to the construction goal of "first-class teaching and first-class undergraduate", and takes a variety of measures to deepen the reform of education and teaching, comprehensively promote quality education, and build and improve a dynamic and innovative talent training system. Over the decades, it has trained nearly 400,000 high-level talents for the country.
In accordance with the scientific and technological development strategy of "leading application, basic breakthrough, and coordinated development", a scientific and technological innovation system covering three levels: basic research layer, high-tech research layer, and technology development layer has been built. It has built major national scientific and technological infrastructure such as Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics (in preparation), National Pulsed Strong Magnetic Field Science Center (in preparation), precision gravity measurement research facilities, and also has 5 national key laboratories, 1 key laboratory of national defense science and technology, 6 national engineering (technology) research centers, 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 national professional laboratories and a number of provincial and ministerial research bases.
The school adheres to the school-running idea of "service is the purpose, contribution is development", faces the main battlefield of national economic construction, combines learning, research and production, closes the cooperative relationship with local governments and large enterprises, and serves the regional economic construction by setting up overseas research institutes, industrialization bases, and carrying out horizontal scientific and technological cooperation.
At present, the university has established good inter-university exchange relations with more than 100 universities in 35 countries and regions around the world, and more than 1,600 foreign experts and scholars come to our university every year to teach, cooperate in scientific research and carry out academic exchange activities.
The Affiliated Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large-scale modern comprehensive hospitals integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and training, and are the medical diagnosis and treatment centers of Hubei Province and even the central and southern regions. The affiliated Liyuan Hospital highlights the characteristics of geriatrics and is the research center for geriatric prevention and treatment in Hubei Province.
