Harbin Institute of Technology, founded in 1920 as Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School, is a key construction university of "211 Project" and "985 Project", and a national key university with aerospace as its characteristics/science and engineering/multidisciplinary coordinated development

Harbin Institute of Technology (Harbin Institute of Technology) is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and is one of the first universities to enter the national "211 Project" and "985 Project".

In 1920, the China Eastern Railway Administration established the Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School, the predecessor of Harbin Institute of Technology, in order to train engineers and technicians, and the school became the cradle of China's modern training of industrial and technical talents. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Harbin Institute of Technology became one of the two universities in the country to learn the higher education model of the former Soviet Union, and since then the school has been the focus of national construction. In 2000, Harbin Institute of Technology and Harbin Jianzhu University, which have the same roots, merged to form the new Harbin Institute of Technology. Today, the university has developed into a national key university with science and engineering as the mainstay, and the coordinated development of science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law and other disciplines.

The school is located in Harbin, the summer capital of the ice city, known as the "Little Paris of the East" and the "Moscow of the East", and has the Weihai Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology and the Shenzhen Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology in Weihai City, Shandong Province and Shenzhen Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, respectively, forming a school-running pattern of "one school and three districts".  

In the long-term process of running the school, the school has formed the school motto of "strict specifications, kung fu to home", cultivated a large number of outstanding talents with a simple and rigorous style of study, and created fruitful scientific research achievements with the innovative spirit of pursuing excellence. With the mission of adapting to the needs of the country and serving the construction of the country, the school has formed a relatively complete discipline system composed of key disciplines, emerging disciplines and supporting disciplines, covering 10 categories such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. At present, the university has 9 first-level disciplines of national key disciplines and 6 second-level disciplines of national key disciplines. In the third round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 10 first-level disciplines of the school ranked among the top five in the country, among which the discipline of mechanics ranked first in the country. Eight disciplines, including materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, environment and ecology, mathematics, biology and biochemistry, have entered the top 1% of ESI research institutions in the world, among which materials science and engineering have entered the top 1‰ of research institutions in the world.  

The school adheres to the historical tradition of people-oriented, cherishing talents, and cultivating and using young talents in an eclectic manner, and has gathered and cultivated a high-level faculty team with enterprising, excellent business and excellent work style, represented by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changjiang Scholars, winners of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and outstanding talents of the new century of the Ministry of Education, which has laid a good talent foundation for the school to build a world-class university. The university has implemented the "Chief International Academic Advisor Program", which employs internationally renowned scholars and management experts to provide guidance for the development and construction of the university's talent training, discipline construction, basic scientific research and management services with the standards and development experience of world-class universities. At the same time, the school also recruits talents at home and abroad, and hires overseas part-time doctoral supervisors, contract foreign experts and overseas students to work in the school, 80% of whom have obtained doctoral degrees from famous universities in the United States, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and other countries, with rich teaching experience and high academic standards.

The school has excellent comprehensive conditions for running a school, complete basic facilities, such as a science park, an experimental center, a gymnasium (field), an activity center, a swimming pool and other facilities, which provide conditions for the learning, living and cultural exchange activities of all teachers, students and staff of the school.

Exploratory frontier basic science problems, and a number of original scientific research achievements with the world's leading level have been obtained. The university has actively participated in 14 of the 16 major national science and technology projects, and has made a number of major landmark achievements in the fields of aerospace, robotics, small satellites, equipment manufacturing, new energy, new materials, etc., and has made positive contributions to national and local economic and social development.

Over the years, Harbin Institute of Technology has always maintained its aerospace characteristics, adhered to independent innovation, and constantly took the initiative to undertake national high-tech, sophisticated and cutting-edge large-scale scientific and technological projects, and its scientific research strength has always ranked among the top universities in the country. The school has successfully developed and launched the satellites "Test No. 1", "Test No. 3", "Kuaizhou No. 1", "Kuaizhou No. 2" and "Lilac No. 2", setting a record of five battles and five victories in the research and development of small satellites in domestic universities. The research on advanced microsatellite platform technology, space manipulator technology, satellite-ground laser link test, Kuaizhou satellite-arrow integration technology, and shooting range photoelectric and control system in Shenguang III laser device were selected as the top ten scientific and technological advances in Chinese universities. "Ultra-precision Special Shape Measurement Technology and Device" and "Satellite-to-Ground Laser Link System Technology" won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2006 and 2014 respectively. A number of technological achievements have provided strong support for manned spaceflight projects, lunar exploration projects, and manned deep diving projects. In the development process of the "Shenzhou" series of spacecraft, Harbin Institute of Technology has overcome many technical difficulties such as KM6, return capsule welding deformation orthopedic technology, three-axis simulation experiment turntable, "simulated weightlessness training tank" for astronaut training, and reflective mirror body for astronauts to exit the capsule. In the rendezvous and docking mission between the Tiangong-1 target vehicle and the Shenzhou series of spacecraft, the school provided more than 20 technical supports. To this end, Harbin Institute of Technology won the honorary title of "Outstanding Contribution Collective of China's Manned Space Project" and is the only university unit in the country. In 2012, Harbin Institute of Technology won the "Commemorative Medal for the Successful Rendezvous and Docking Mission of Tiangong-1 and Shenzhou-9". In 2013, the "Collaborative Innovation Center for Aerospace Science and Technology" led by the university became one of the first 14 centers launched in the "2011 Plan". In 2014, our university was officially recognized by the National Development and Reform Commission as the lead construction unit of the national major scientific and technological infrastructure project "Space Environment Ground Simulation Facility".
