The University of Science and Technology of China, founded in Beijing in 1958, is a key university under the "985 Project" and "211 Project".

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a comprehensive national key university affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on cutting-edge science and high technology, with characteristic management and humanities.

It was founded in Beijing in September 1958, and the first president was Guo Moruo. Her founding has been called "a major event in the history of education and science in our country". After the establishment of the school, the Chinese Academy of Sciences implemented the school-running policy of "running the whole school and combining the departments", the school closely focused on the emerging scientific and technological fields urgently needed by the country, set up departments and majors, creatively combined science and engineering, that is, cutting-edge science and high technology, paid attention to the teaching of basic courses, and cultivated emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary cutting-edge scientific and technological talents with a high starting point and wide caliber, bringing together a group of the most prestigious scientists in China, such as Yan Jici, Hua Luogeng, Qian Xuesen, Zhao Zhongyao, Guo Yonghuai, Zhao Jiuzhang, Pei Shizhang, etc., so that the school has developed rapidly. In the second year of its establishment, it was listed as a national key university.

At the beginning of 1970, the school moved to Hefei City, Anhui Province, and started its second venture. After 1978, the school was determined to reform and make bold innovations, and took the lead in proposing and implementing a series of educational reform measures with innovative spirit and forward-looking consciousness in the country, such as the establishment of juvenile classes, the first construction of graduate schools, the construction of national major science projects, and the opening of schools to the world, so that the school could recover and develop rapidly. During the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan" periods, it has been the focus of national construction, and soon developed into an important base for the cultivation of high-quality talents and high-level scientific research in the country.

Since the 90s of the 20th century, the university has taken the initiative to adapt to the requirements and challenges of science and technology, education and social and economic development at home and abroad, conscientiously implemented the "Outline of China's Education Reform and Development", vigorously promoted the reform of teaching and scientific research and structural adjustment, carried out the third venture, and became one of the first universities to implement the "985 Project" and "211 Project" in the country, and the only university to participate in the national knowledge innovation project.

For a long time, the school has always adhered to the school-running policy of "running the whole school and combining the departments", carried forward the school spirit of "advancing with the red school, blending theory and practice", formed a fine tradition of continuous innovation, and the distinctive characteristics of combining teaching and scientific research, theory and practice, and cultivated a large number of high-level talents with both ability and political integrity. Facing the world's scientific frontiers and major national needs, the university condenses scientific goals, carries out scientific research, strives to improve the level of academic research, scientific research innovation ability and scientific research competitiveness, and has achieved a number of original scientific and technological achievements with the world's leading level.

The university has 20 colleges, 30 departments, and graduate schools, as well as Suzhou Research Institute, Shanghai Research Institute, and Institute of Advanced Technology of China University of Science and Technology. There are 6 national basic science research and teaching talent training bases in mathematics, physics, mechanics, astronomy, biological sciences and chemistry, 1 national life science and technology talent training base, 8 national key disciplines of first-level disciplines, 4 national key disciplines of secondary disciplines, 2 national key cultivation disciplines, and 18 key disciplines of first-level disciplines in Anhui Province. It has established the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Science at the Microscale (in preparation), the Steady-State High Magnetic Field Science Center, the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, the State Key Laboratory of Nuclear Detection and Nuclear Electronics, the National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing, the National High Performance Computing Center (Hefei), the Anhui Mengcheng National Geophysical National Field Science Observation and Research Station, and other national scientific research institutions and 45 provincial and ministerial key scientific research institutions.

The school has a team of highly qualified teachers. At present, there are 1,812 teaching and scientific research personnel, including 615 professors (including equivalent professional and technical personnel), 698 associate professors (including equivalent professional and technical personnel), 48 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 17 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries, 44 "Thousand Talents Program", 160 "Youth Thousand Talents Program", 48 "Changjiang Scholars" of the Ministry of Education, 116 winners of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 7 national famous teachers, and 155 "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences There are 72 winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars. At the same time, a number of well-known scholars at home and abroad have been hired as honorary (visiting) professors and "master chair" professors.

There are more than 15,500 students, including more than 1,900 doctoral students, more than 6,200 master's students, and more than 7,400 undergraduates. The source of undergraduate students and the quality of training have always been among the best in the country.

The university library has a collection of 2.2 million books, and has built a first-class campus computer network in China, as well as a number of public experimental centers for scientific research and teaching.
