MH's story
One morning in early May 1999, Sherpa Babu Chiri stumbled to Mountain Hardwear's California-based company with a proposal he had been working on for only four days. Despite his diminutive stature, Babu is always smiling, confident that he can fulfill his ambition of spending the night on Mount Everest. All he needed was a tent for him from Mountain Hardwear.
Babu had previously visited other specialist outdoor companies, but only Mountain Hardwear was serious about his proposal. While no explorer had ever tried before, or even wanted to spend a night at the top of the Earth, Babu's enthusiasm and confidence led Martin Zemitis, chief designer of Mountain Hardwear, to believe that if anyone dreams of such a feat, the least we can do is to provide them with a shelter that can withstand the polar weather.
When all the details were settled, Martin only had three days left to build the tent. On Friday morning he came to Babu with his tired body and the tent he had built, and after Babu took it, he said goodbye to Martin and set off for Nepal.
Babu eventually managed to reach the summit and stayed at the summit for 21 hours. The following year he set a record of 16 hours and 56 minutes, a record that was not broken until 2003.
Mountain Hardwear's stance on products and the outdoors is unwavering, innovative, not afraid of failure, and not afraid of challenges that others thought were impossible to overcome! The most important thing is that sportsmen, explorers, Babu on Everest, and even users who enjoy using equipment in their home and back garden are all connected with us, believe in and adhere to this philosophy!
