At the beginning of the 20th century, the west wind was blowing eastward, and the tide of modern industrial civilization was surging in Shanghai. In July 1911, Mr. Huang Chujiu, an industrialist from Yuyao, Zhejiang, opened Longhu Company in Shanghai. Relying on his experience in studying medicine with his father when he was young, Huang Chujiu based on the ancient famous prescription "Zhuge Xingjun San" and the family ancestral prescription "Seventy-two Symptoms Prescription", and created his own medicine Dragon Tiger Ren Dan that awakens the mind and relieves heat and nausea. Four years later, the company changed its name to Zhonghua Pharmaceutical Company, and became the first national pharmaceutical industry enterprise in China with an independent industrial structure and operation model, changing the traditional production mode of Sinopharm handicraft industry.

Over the past 100 years, the company has written a number of firsts in the history of China's pharmaceutical development with a lasting sense of innovation, a strong brand strategy, and an in-depth category focus.

In 1912, the following year after the listing of Dragon and Tiger Rendan, based on the trendy brand awareness, the company created the "Dragon and Tiger" trademark with the composition of the well-known Chinese folk flying dragon and tiger staring at each other, expressing the enterprising spirit and kingly spirit of the enterprise, and petitioning the Republic of China government for a license. In 1923, the Beiyang government promulgated the Trademark Law, and the Dragon and Tiger brand and Rendan and the design were re-declared, and they were approved for registration in 1925, becoming the first standardized pharmaceutical trademark recognized by the government in China.

In the 50s of the 20th century, the company developed and put into production another main product, cool oil, and with original formula and manufacturing process, it was included in the national secret technology catalog, providing a new variety carrier for the development of the enterprise.

In the 60s of the 20th century, the company was self-reliant, and dedicated its own design and manufacture of the Rendan automatic packaging line with its own mind and sweat, and was awarded the national invention certificate issued by Marshal Nie Rongzhen, director of the State Science and Technology Commission.

In the tide of reform and opening up in the 80s of the 20th century, the company dominated the domestic market while entering the overseas market. In 1987, the "Temple of Heaven" brand cooling oil won the gold medal of the Leipzig Autumn International Exposition in Germany, and was popular in Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States with the reputation of "Oriental Potion", and was exported to more than 80 countries and regions. The company has become the largest traditional Chinese medicine enterprise in terms of export volume and foreign exchange earnings of single products of traditional Chinese medicine preparations in China during the same period. In the same year, Comrade Jiang Zemin, then mayor of Shanghai, visited the factory and happily presented a banner with the inscription "Develop the Pharmaceutical Industry and Increase Export Earnings."

Since 2000, the company has kept pace with the times to strengthen brand building, and the "Dragon and Tiger" trademark has become the first batch of "well-known protection" recognized by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce as the first batch of "well-known protection" in the pharmaceutical category with its hundreds of millions of people used by its products every year and its excellent social visibility and reputation. This is also the first time that Shanghai pharmaceutical industry has won the honor of national brand.

In 2004, the company was subordinate to the OTC Division of Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group, and achieved remarkable results in the OTC drug market.

In 2009, the company resumed its legal personality again and changed its name to Shanghai Zhonghua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
