Bharat Petroleum Company (BPCL) is the second largest oil company in India, and the first state-owned enterprise in India to have advanced information processing equipment and take a leading position in information technology, Bharat was founded in 1860 as the Standard Petroleum Trust Company, and in the early days it merged with Anglo-Dutch Shell and Rothschilds to form ASIATIC Petroleum Company in India. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BURMAH-SHELL OIL RESERVE AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANY IN INDIA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BURMAH PETROLEUM COMPANY, WHICH WAS EVENTUALLY NATIONALIZED INTO BHARAT OIL COMPANY IN 1976.
