Kaya toast is Singapore's national breakfast, and the people of Nanyang have added a Western dish of roasted toast to Kaya. Dried kaya sauce is made from eggs, milk, coconut milk and cane sugar, and most of the time colorful leaves are added, so the color is usually olive green, and the overall taste is burnt and crispy and sweet. Founded in 1944, Ya Kun is a small coffee stall that has become almost synonymous with kaya toast with its brown toast slices as thin as wafers and delicious kaya sauce.

Yakun is best known for its kaya butter toast, which is made with thin slices of toast, baked or charcoal-grilled until crispy like a biscuit, thickly coated with a layer of kaya paste, and sandwiched with a slice of cold butter, which must be freshly removed from the freezer and melted when heated.
