Shanghai Natural History Museum - Institutional Reviews

Children are always interested in dinosaurs, and the best dinosaur-themed museum in China is located in Zigong, Sichuan. The Shanghai Nature Museum is not themed around dinosaurs, but it is firmly in second place and has become a great parent-child attraction.

The museum was formed by the merger of the Xujiahui Museum (the oldest museum in China) and the Shanghai Museum (affiliated with the Royal Society of the British Museum). The museum has a collection of more than 290,000 pieces, after the relocation only displays more than 11,000 specimen models, but its pattern is more exquisite, elegant, the old museum in the Ming Dynasty ancient corpses, roundworms and other "terrifying" exhibits have been sealed, you can rest assured to visit.

The new museum takes species evolution, biological survival strategies, and human civilization as the implicit main lines, and sets up 10 permanent exhibition halls on five floors, including "The Mystery of Origin" and "The Road to the Future". The "Mystery of Origins" exhibition hall on the L2 floor shows many hypotheses about the origin of life from the beginning of the universe, and also analyzes the transition of life with important events in evolutionary history.

The "River of Life" on the L1 floor uses time and geography as the framework boundaries to display various specimen models. Due to the limitations of the venue, the exhibits are crowded, and the effect is actually average, which is quite a feeling of "reporting the name of the dish". Interestingly, one of the African lions has become popular on the Internet because of its "dull eyes", and there are many people who take pictures. The "Experience Nature" exhibition area on the same floor is worth a stop, where there are many turtles, lizards, frogs, snakes, fish, spiders and other living creatures, which can be observed through the window at zero distance, and the regularly opened touch pool can be used to pet sea creatures such as starfish.

"Evolutionary Path" is located on the B1 floor, and the effect is exquisite. The hall displays typical creatures from the Archean to the Cenozoic, subdivided into sections such as "from water to land" and "from ape to man". There are many paleontological entities and fossil models in this area, such as ancient elephants, giant tortoises, and dunkle fish, and the Argentinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex even writhing and howling constantly. In addition, the science video of the area is also excellent, and the Cambrian small theater vividly shows the strange creatures of the time; "From Ape to Man" also showcased Fudan University's latest Y-chromosome genetic research in a video, vividly demonstrating how Chinese ancestors migrated from the African continent to East Asia.

The "Shanghai Story" on the B2M mezzanine is the most suitable for locals to visit, showing visitors the appearance of Shanghai in ancient times with detailed specimens and models, and displaying typical species models of ancient and modern Shanghai.

The B2 floor is large and exquisite, and most of the pictures displayed in the circle of friends of tourists come from this floor. The most eye-catching is the Mamenxi dragon fossil model in the middle of the gallery, which has the longest neck in any known organism; "Wisdom of Life" tells the survival strategies of different creatures, if you are interested in "mimicry", you may wish to pay attention to it; "Colorful Life" is the most suitable for taking pictures, and the colorful butterflies, beetles, and shellfish are placed in a centralized manner, and form various shapes, which is also the most stylish area in the museum, and even the chandeliers are composed of pine towers of different sizes, and the atmosphere is like an old-style museum.

The Museum of Natural History receives about 2 million visitors, and the statistics show that the peak flow of visitors is after 13:00, so it is recommended to visit in the morning. In addition, there are many experience programs in the museum, such as fossil excavation experiences 3 times a day, each 30 minutes each, which is not to be missed if it is a parent-child trip, and it is best to make an online reservation. During the event, the children, dressed in white robes and uniforms, used archaeological tools to excavate dinosaur fossils with archaeological tools under the guidance of volunteers, of course, these fossil models and soil layers were "faked" in advance. In addition, films such as Earth Power and Into Africa are very sought-after, so it's best to make an appointment in advance.
