The history of this national key ophthalmology hospital in Guangzhou and even in South China can be traced back to the ophthalmology bureau founded by American missionaries in the 19th century, and it is also the first eye hospital affiliated to colleges and universities in China, officially founded in 1965. After more than 50 years of development, Zhongshan Eye Center has been ranked among the top ophthalmology hospitals in China, and according to the "Best Hospitals and Best Specialty Reputation Rankings in China" released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University in Shanghai in 2015, Zhongshan Eye Center ranked first in the list of ophthalmology specialty hospitals. Internationally, the Asia-Pacific Ophthalmological Association (APAO) has announced its permanent presence at Zhongshan Eye Center, the first international medical academic organization headquartered in China. As an important platform and symbol of the internationalization of China's ophthalmic medicine, the comprehensive strength and influence of the hospital are unparalleled. As an ophthalmology hospital, the clinical departments of Zhongshan Eye Center cover almost all ophthalmic diseases, from the common laser treatment center, strabismus and amblyopia specialists, cataracts, glaucoma, to the more marginal departments such as orbital diseases and ocular oncology, reflecting strong professional strength, talent and equipment advantages. Among them, it has to be mentioned that the cataract specialty, which is trusted by many patients, is one of the earliest specialties established in Zhongshan Ophthalmology, is currently the largest and internationally renowned cataract diagnosis and treatment center in China, and was rated as a key medical specialty in Guangdong Province in 2004. The department is a pioneer in the development of femtosecond laser, micro-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery and a variety of new intraocular lens implantation in China, and has reached the international advanced level for conventional cataract and congenital, concurrent, traumatic and other complex and refractory cataracts, and the basic and clinical research on cataract has been published in authoritative ophthalmology, IOVS, JCRS and other authoritative ophthalmology journals at home and abroad, and has been recognized. Professor Liu Yizhi, the director of the discipline, is an expert with special allowance from the State Council, and one of the earliest experts to carry out minimally invasive cataract surgery in China, and is an authority in the industry and academic circles related to cataract. In 2012, Zhongshan Eye Center integrated the original fundus medicine, fundus surgery, macular degeneration and other departments into the fundus disease treatment center, which is deservedly known as the largest and most technical fundus disease surgery specialty in China. According to the characteristics of fundus diseases, it has pioneered many new technologies, such as minimally invasive glass resection technology and anti-VEGF drug therapy, which have been clinically verified in the diagnosis and treatment of major fundus diseases such as macular diseases, various retinal detachments, fundus lesions with high myopia, and retinopathy of prematurity. Another department worth mentioning is the Department of Ocular Oncology/Orbital Disease, as the most marginal discipline of ophthalmology, in addition to traditional ophthalmology, this department is also related to oncology, neurosurgery, imaging diagnosis and other disciplines, so it is rarely involved in domestic ophthalmology hospitals. The department ranks among the advanced levels in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital and ocular tumors, especially in retinoblastoma and thyroid-related eye diseases. In addition, plastic and aesthetic surgery for some complex orbital fractures and eye deformities caused by various diseases has also restored the normal appearance of many patients. Due to the reputation of Zhongshan Eye Center, patients from all over the world come to seek medical treatment all year round, and the flow of people is very considerable, and it is located in the old city and adjacent to Zhixin Middle School, which cannot be expanded on a large scale, and the departments in the hospital are very crowded, and even occasionally there is a phenomenon of disorder out of control, which is particularly prominent in Building 1. It should be reminded that the ophthalmology hospital has a large number of examination items, and the flow of people in various examination departments is concentrated, and the number assignment mechanism is adopted. In addition, the outpatient area of the hospital is extended in strips, and the division of each functional area is relatively chaotic, and the guidance of some areas is insufficient, which is easy to cause patients to get lost. As Zhongshan Eye Center undertakes many teaching tasks, many doctors will be assisted by interns during consultations, and patients are advised to communicate directly with the attending doctors to better understand the condition and treatment.
