Total is one of the world's four largest petrochemical companies, headquartered in Paris, France, with lubricants in more than 110 countries around the world. On May 7, 2003, it was named Total (Total), which is composed of three brands: Total, FINA and ELF. The company is the result of the merger of France's Total and Belgium's FINA in November 1998 and Total's acquisition of Elf in March 2000.

Total is the world's fourth largest integrated oil and gas listed company, with operations in more than 130 countries around the world, covering the entire oil and gas value chain, including upstream business (oil and gas exploration, development and production, and liquefied natural gas) and downstream business (refining and sales, trading and transportation of crude oil and refined products). It employs more than 120,000 people, generated a turnover of 102.5 billion euros in 2002 and total assets of 85 billion euros. The top six shareholders of the company are BNP Paribas (0.2%), AREVA (0.8%), Société Générale (0.7%), Brussels Lambert Group (3.4%), and Belgian National Securities (1.2%), and the rest of the shares are held by internal employees, affiliated enterprises of the group and the public. The company's highest body is the Executive Committee, which consists of three administrative departments, including the Strategy and Risk Assessment Department, the Finance Department, and the Personnel Department, as well as three production departments: upstream (exploration and development of crude oil and natural gas, natural gas and electricity), downstream (refining and sales of refined oil, international trade of crude oil and various refined oil products), and chemicals.

1. Upstream business. At the end of 2001, Total had oil and gas reserves equivalent to 11 billion barrels of oil. At an output rate of 2.2 million barrels per day, it can be mined for 14 years. With 13,870 employees worldwide, Total is the largest producer in Africa and the second largest in the Middle East, and fourth in Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America. Total is also one of the world's largest producers of liquefied natural gas. In addition, Total also has strong strength in natural gas storage, transportation, power generation and sales, and is the most important natural gas storage and transportation enterprise in France, and the most important natural gas power generation manufacturer and natural gas electricity seller in the United Kingdom. Total has 3,656 MW of power generation capacity in South America and is one of the largest gas pipeline operators in South America.

2. Downstream business. Total has 28 refineries (13 wholly owned) producing 2.66 million barrels per day and selling 3.75 million barrels per day, with a break-even point of $8 per tonne in 2002. With a total of 35,743 downstream employees, it is the first producer in Europe and the fifth largest in the world. Total's sales network is distributed in 16,676 locations, including Total, Fina and Elf

Among the brand's gas stations, it occupies 12% of the market share in Europe and 20% in Africa. Outside of Europe, the company is concentrating its business on high-growth regions (Africa, the Mediterranean coast and Asia), as well as specialty products such as fuel oil, LPG, aviation fuel, lubricants, waxes, bitumen and solvents.

3. Chemical industry. With 71,500 employees worldwide and a turnover of $19.6 billion in 2001, Atofina is the chemical division of Total AG, the world's sixth largest chemical company, with a focus on basic chemicals and polymers, intermediates and specialty polymers, and specialty chemicals. The petrochemical plant grew through a merger with the Company's refining business.
