In the eighth year of Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty, that is, in 1828, Wang Zebang opened a clinic with a unique style in Xiguan, Guangzhou, in addition to Langzhong sitting in the hall to practice medicine, there are also two half-person-high gourd-shaped large copper kettles on the desk in the lobby of the clinic, and the side of the pot is a row of blue and white coarse porcelain bowls. Passers-by only need to drop a few copper coins, they can pick up the celadon bowl and pour out a bowl of herbal tea from the big copper pot to enjoy it, which is the well-known Wanglaoji herbal tea today.

During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, a miasma broke out in Guangzhou, and the epidemic spread. Wang Zebang, the founder of Wanglaoji Herbal Tea, in order to save patients, did not hesitate to test the medicine and developed an herbal tea formula. This herbal tea not only relieved the pain of the villagers, but also helped the villagers avoid disasters such as smallpox and epidemics. Since then, Wang Zebang has become famous, and was summoned into the palace by Emperor Daoguang and made him a court officer of the Imperial Hospital. In the seventeenth year of Daoguang (1837), Wang Zebang opened an herbal tea shop in Guangzhou and named it "Wang Laoji".

In 1840, Wang Laoji chopped and packaged the herbal tea materials for sale, so that customers could take them home to brew by themselves, at the same time, Wang Laoji's descendants also inherited the ancestral industry and opened branches of Wang Laoji in various places, and registered the gourd-shaped Wang Laoji trademark, with the earliest brand effect, Wang Laoji herbal tea gradually dwarfed in Liangguang, Beijing, Shanghai and other places.

After Wang Zebang's death, the herbal tea business was inherited by Wang Hengrui and Wang Henghui and continued to operate. In 1956, the public-private partnership "Wanglaoji United Pharmaceutical Factory" was established, and the state undertook all the means of production of Guangzhou Wanglaoji by purchase in accordance with the joint venture policy. Since then, it has been renamed Guangzhou No. 9 Traditional Chinese Medicine Factory and Yangcheng Pharmaceutical Factory. In November 1992, Guangzhou Yangcheng Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was established. In the same year, the boxed "Wanglaoji" and canned "Wanglaoji" herbal tea were launched.

In 1996, GPC was formally established, and intangible assets such as the Wanglaoji trademark were held by GPC in accordance with relevant regulations. In 2000, GPC licensed the red canned Wanglaoji herbal tea to a third party. In 2004, Guangzhou Yangcheng Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. changed its name to Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

So far, Wanglaoji has carried out the Madrid and single country registration of Wanglaoji trademark in 58 countries and regions around the world, and the Wanglaoji brand has gone international.
Wanglaoji brand development:

With the expiration of the contract of Hongcan Wanglaoji, on March 28, 2012, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Guangzhou Wanglaoji Health Industry Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Wanglaoji Health). On May 28, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group held a trademark authorization ceremony for Wanglaoji, and awarded the production and operation rights of Wanglaoji in red cans and red bottles to Wanglaoji Health. Wanglaoji Health has made a comprehensive deployment in accordance with the "136 Development Strategy" of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group, built a three-dimensional national brand of Wanglaoji, and led the development of the health industry. Subsequently, the new red can Wang Laoji made its debut on the Great Wall of China, one of the eight wonders of the world and a landmark of the Chinese nation. At the same time, it announced the establishment of a 182.8 million yuan Wang Laoji Love Fund, the first project of which will be used to fund 10,000 extremely poor students to realize their dreams of university. On June 28, Wanglaoji Health officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement with top food production enterprises, raw materials and packaging material suppliers in more than 30 countries, including Uni-President, Yinlu, Wellcome, Jiamei, Morishima, Hongbang, Caizhilin, and Yili. Subsequently, in Taizhou and Nansha Development Zone, Wanglaoji canned (bottled) herbal tea production base was prepared. Wang Yang, then secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, now a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council, once sent a message to the Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group to build "Wang Laoji" into China's "Coca-Cola". At the end of December, it was announced that the Wanglaoji series had added new members to the family: low-sugar herbal tea, sugar-free herbal tea and solid herbal tea.

On June 13, 2013, Dr. Murad, President of the General Research Institute of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group, signed a contract with SGS (Swiss General Notary Public) on behalf of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group on the "International Standard Research Project of Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Plant Beverage". At the same time, the national 863 project functional food safety evaluation factor research project jointly undertaken by the company and the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Wanglaoji herbal tea has the effect of prolonging the life of animals. Relevant studies were carried out in accordance with the human consumption protocol of functional foods, and it was preliminarily found that the subjects' liver and kidney function, blood lipid typing, blood routine and other physical examination indicators, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system and mood have been improved to a certain extent, and drinking Wanglaoji herbal tea is beneficial to health.

In May 2012, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) ruled on the right to use the trademark "Wanglaoji" of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group and Hongdao Group, the parent company of JDB.

The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission ruled that the "Supplementary Agreement on the License of the "Wanglaoji" Trademark and the Supplementary Agreement on the License Contract for the Trademark "Wanglaoji" signed between GPC and Hongdao Group, the parent company of JDB, were invalid, and Hongdao Group stopped using the trademark "Wanglaoji".

According to the announcement of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., on May 11, 2011, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group received an award dated May 9, 2012 from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, which made an award on the arbitration of the dispute over the trademark license agreement of "Wang Laoji":

The "Supplementary Agreement on the License of the "Wanglaoji" Trademark and the Supplementary Agreement on the License Contract for the Trademark of "Wanglaoji" signed between GPC and Hongdao (Group) Co., Ltd., the parent company of JDB, are invalid; Hongdao (Group) Co., Ltd. stopped using the trademark "Wanglaoji"; Each party shall bear 50% of the arbitration fee.

The award shall be final and effective from the date of its issuance.
