Since investing in China in 1998, UPM has grown rapidly in China, investing more than US$2 billion in Changshu Economic Development Zone, Jiangsu Province, and has established a paper mill and self-adhesive label factory, as well as an Asian R&D center.

UPM (China) is Finland's largest single investment in China and one of the largest manufacturers of all-chemical wood pulp offset and copy paper in China, with an annual production capacity of 1.4 million tonnes for printing paper, office paper, specialty paper and label materials. UPM Raflatac Changshu manufactures conventional label materials and offers a wide range of solutions to customers in China and the Asia-Pacific region. UPM's Asia R&D Centre is dedicated to driving research into local pulp and paper raw materials, as well as supporting production and customer service in China and the Asia-Pacific region. Wood products such as UPM-Visa sawn timber and plywood have been widely used in major projects and civil buildings since entering the Chinese market, and have won good market performance. In addition, the China Pulp Business Unit, established in 2011, provides sustainable and competitive pulp products to the Chinese market.

UPM is committed to sustainable development and is constantly improving its economic, social and environmental performance. While investing heavily in state-of-the-art equipment, the Group has adopted advanced management and environmental practices in its operations in China. Thanks to these initiatives, UPM (China) Co., Ltd. was awarded the title of "National Environment-Friendly Enterprise" by the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) in 2005 for its consistently good environmental performance. And in 2008, it became the first copy paper manufacturer to hold China's environmental label. In addition, UPM also devotes itself to local social and economic development by promoting research-enterprise cooperation, donating to education, and supporting public welfare. Since entering China, the Group has been selected as the "Best Employer" in China in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 by virtue of its long-term corporate culture of equal management and respect for talents.
