Founded in 1981 in the United States, NCPI is a full-line provider of cyber critical physical infrastructure (NCPI) products, providing power protection/physical IT infrastructure/management and data security solutions, and was acquired by Schneider Electric in 2007
In 1981, three power engineers from the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) jointly founded APC, which focused on the research and development of solar energy. In 1984, APC noticed the potential of the uninterruptible power supply market and combined its own technical advantages to start specializing in UPS products and launched its first uninterruptible power supply (UPS) 750 model. In July 1988, APC became a publicly traded company, thus obtaining sufficient funds to ensure the development of its business. The stock issue code is APCC. In 1998, APC completed the transformation from a small UPS leader to an "end-to-end" power protection solution provider with the acquisition of Silcon Corporation, a large UPS supplier.
For nearly 40 years, APC has become the industry standard for reliable power and physical IT infrastructure. Now a leader in the IT sector, big and small, our history of innovation has propelled our products into the global spotlight with the protection of infrastructure, management and data security solutions for organizations around the world.
In 1981, the American Power Conversion Corporation was established to focus on the research and development of solar power. APC, formed by three power engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), later opened a production facility in Rhode Island in 1986; The company also produced its first UPS, the 450AT, that year, which won PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award. In 1988, APC's shares were listed for trading.
In 1989, the award-winning PowerChute® software was launched, which revolutionized power management; In the same year, the product was sold through two major distributors, Tech Data and Ingram Micro In 1990, APC continued to introduce superior products such as the Smart-UPS® product line, which is now recognized as the industry's go-to network power protection solution. In the same year, Rodger B. Dowdell, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, was selected by Inc. Magazine) awarded New England the title of "Entrepreneur of the Year".
Throughout the 1990s, APC entered other markets with 155 new products, such as the SurgeArrest® surge protector; Matrix-UPS®, the industry's first modular UPS; A new generation of Smart-UPS; the company's first Back-UPS Pro® model; and Symmetra® Power Array™, which revolutionizes the industry with redundancy, scalability, and serviceability in a single solution. The development of these products, the inauguration of two international production facilities (Galway, Ireland, 1994 and the Philippines, 1996), and the acquisitions of Systems Enhancement Corp. and Silcon A/S drove APC's annual revenue to a milestone of more than $1 billion in 1998.
APC entered the residential technology market in 1999 with PowerShield, a solution to the growing broadband needs of home cables and fixed wireless applications. Since then, the company has entered the new millennium with three strategic acquisitions, which have opened up three markets, namely: DC power supply market for communication equipment; the cable and connectivity market for home and enterprise IT applications; and the precision cooling market for data centers and communications equipment. With the acquisition of ARRIS in 2001, APC further expanded its capabilities in broadband networked power. In 2002, APC revolutionized data center power management with the launch of PowerStruXure™, the first product in its Network Critical Physical Infrastructure (NCPI) architecture. In the same year, the company entered the NASDAQ 100 index, which covers the 100 largest non-financial stocks in the market.
In 2003, InfraStruXure™ was first introduced. Its integrated power, cooling, cabinets, management, and services enable an open, adaptable, and integrated solution that has won nearly 20 awards worldwide. The TravelPower™ Case, the world's first chassis with built-in device charging capabilities, was also an instant success when it was launched. In 2004, the InfraStruXure product line was expanded to refrigeration systems and on-line power generation. In the same year, APC won more than 100 awards worldwide for the excellence of its products and business. Building on the success of PowerStruXure since 2002, APC expanded its NCPI offering with the acquisition of Netbotz, a start-up technology company dedicated to solving the physical security of IT equipment, which allows APC to extend its industry expertise into the management and security categories.
