The world's leading brand in the commercial notebook market, the original IBM laptop brand was acquired by Lenovo, and has a high reputation in the industry for its rugged and reliable characteristics, and has maintained a classic black appearance since its inception
ThinkPad, known as "ThinkPad in Chinese", was a portable computer brand under the IBMPC division until 2005, and enjoyed a high reputation in the industry for its rugged and reliable features. Following Lenovo's acquisition of the IBMPC Division, the ThinkPad trademark was owned by Lenovo. Since its inception, the ThinkPad has maintained a classic black look and has its own unique perspective on technologies such as the TrackPoint (commonly known as the little red dot), the ThinkLight keyboard light, the full-size keyboard, and the APS (Active Protection System).
ThinkPad name
The name "ThinkPad" is inspired by IBM's pads. Every IBM employee or person who goes to an IBM training center is given a pad with the company's motto, "THINK," printed on it. At a meeting to discuss the name of a laptop product, one attendee casually threw one of these pads into the air and landed on the conference table, and another was inspired to suggest the name "ThinkPad." At first, IBM executives were opposed to using this name, because IBM had always used numbers to identify product models. However, the name "ThinkPad" was so popular and loved by employees and customers that IBM executives finally agreed to use "ThinkPad" as the product name.
Thinkpad vs Lenovo
On December 8, 2004, Lenovo Group officially announced the acquisition of IBM's global PC business for a total price of $1.25 billion, including desktop business and notebook business. Payment options include $650 million in cash and $600 million in Lenovo stock. After the transaction, Legend Holdings will own about 45% of Lenovo Group, and IBM will own about 18.5% of the shares, and the merger is seen as a strategic cooperation between the two Chinese and American IT manufacturers. The new Lenovo Group will have the right to use IBM's brand under the agreement for a period of five years, as well as full access to the trademarks and related technology, which will give Lenovo's products the widest brand recognition in the global PC market.
