Generali was founded in Trieste in December 1831 as Generali, a royal Austrian-Italian franchise. In 1848, it was officially renamed Generali Insurance Company. In 1882, Generali Insurance Group was founded. Generali is made up of 614 companies (167 of which are integrated conglomerates), with Generali (Italy's largest insurance company) headquartered in Trieste directly or indirectly controlling its subsidiaries.
Generali operates insurance in 50 markets on all continents through 120 local locations (group holding companies or banks) and its own overseas offices. Generali is the fourth largest insurance group in Europe in terms of the number of insurance types. In terms of turnover, Generali Group has become one of the world's top 10 insurance groups.
