In 1981, Professor Colin Sullivan and his colleagues at the University of Sydney developed a nasal continuous positive airway pressure device that provided the first successful non-invasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

In 1988, for various reasons, Baxter decided not to enter the sleep apnea market, and in 1989, in order to buy the rights to Sullivan's sleep technology from Baxter, Dr. Farrell founded ResMed. With the acquisition of the rights, ResMed began commercializing Sullivan's CPAP prototype device for scale-up production, so that it could effectively treat a wide range of patients with obstructive sleep apnea, the main clinical manifestation of sleep-disordered breathing.
