Lansinoh was founded more than 30 years ago by a breastfeeding mom, Ms. Resheda Hagen, in Portland, Oregon, USA, and was registered as Lansinoh in 1978. At the time, Ms. Resheda's first child had just been born and she chose to breastfeed, but after a few days, her nipples progressed from mild to extremely painful. Since the existing products at the time failed to help her with the pain, she began to hesitate to wean. A head of the International Breast Milk Society encouraged her to continue trying breastfeeding and recommended lanolin, but there were no stores selling lanolin at the time.

Ms. Resheda's husband, a doctor, found a jar of lanolin about a pound from a hospital pharmacy and took it home. When Ms. Resheda applied lanolin to her sore nipples, she immediately felt the pain relieved. Over the next few days, her nipples healed and she continued to breastfeed successfully. She then began to promote the benefits of "pure lanolin" as a treatment for nipple pain in breastfeeding mothers.

Ms. Resheda established a company in 1984 to provide breastfeeding women with a safe and effective alternative to highly cosmetic products that can be used to relieve sore nipples. She decided to buy a pound of lanolin per jar and personally dispensed it into smaller containers to sell to breastfeeding moms.
