Bayer History
Dye salesman Friedrich Bayer and master colorist Johann Friedrich Eskott collaborated to create "Friedr. Bayer et comp.", to produce and sell synthetic dyes.
Although the production of dyes from coal tar derivatives has only been around for a few years, it has opened up entirely new business areas for the young chemical industry.
The establishment of a scientific laboratory in Wuppertal-Elberfeld (headquarters from 1878 to 1912) set new standards in industrial research. As a result of its efforts and exploration, Bayer has developed a wide range of intermediate products, dyes and pharmaceuticals, including aspirin, the "medicine of the century". Aspirin was developed by Felix Hoffmann and introduced to the market in 1899. During this time, Bayer has established a presence in the international community, exporting as far as China and establishing subsidiaries in Russia, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States. Aspirin has also become one of the best-selling drugs in history thanks to Bayer's efforts. At the same time, Bayer has established itself as a dominant player in the global pharmaceutical market.
After World War II, Bayer once again focused on research and development, laying the foundation for a re-establishment of its business operations. Further developments in the polyurethane chemical industry, new crop protection products, fibers such as polyacrylonitrile Dralon, thermoplastic material Makrolon, new synthetic fiber dyes and many other inventions have played a pivotal role in the company's expansion. New products such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular drugs, skin antifungal drugs, and broad-spectrum antibiotics have been born from Bayer's pharmaceutical laboratories.
In 1988, Bayer celebrated its 125th anniversary. In the same year, the Bayer Group became the first German company to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
In 1994, Bayer acquired Sterling Winthrop's North American self-medication business – a milestone in the company's history, as it allowed the company to reuse "Bayer" as its company name in the United States. For the first time in 75 years, Bayer operates in the United States under its own name and with the Bayer Cross logo as its corporate identity. In 1995, Miles Inc. in the USA was renamed Bayer.
In 2002, Bayer shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange, the world's most important stock market, under the ticker symbol BAY. On July 1 of the same year, the Bayer Group began the largest reorganization in its history, resulting in the company's current organizational structure.
