Like Sisyphus, Yanji is currently the leading national chain bookstore brand, which was born in 2006 and has nearly 40 directly operated chain stores in 13 cities across the country as of 2017.
Yanjiyou Xinyuan Metropolis Branch is located in a relatively remote shopping mall, so its customer traffic is relatively small compared to the Sisyphean Bookstore of Yitian Holiday World. Yanji is similar to Sisyphus in terms of positioning and location selection, with themed bookstores, creative markets and coffee as the three major selling points, and the market feedback over the years has fully proved that this business strategy is effective.
Half of the space in the Xinyuan Metropolis store is occupied by coffee shops, making it difficult for the bookstore to store enough books. The books in the store are mainly Chinese and foreign literature, historical novels, social science and culture, biographies, business management and art design, and the selection policy is biased towards the mass market, and there are not many distinctive elements.
The store has a wide variety of coffees, including hand-brewed classics such as lattes and espresso, as well as a selection of pour-over coffees from Ethiopian, Colombian and Brazilian coffee beans. In addition, yogurt, European and Chinese teas and other drinks are available. Although the creative market occupies a large part of the store, there are not many highlights, except for stationery such as handbooks, which also sell aromatherapy, backpacks and mini speakers.
Compared with branches in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Xi'an Yanji has limitations in holding cultural activities such as celebrity meetings and book signings. As a comprehensive cultural space, its function has also been compromised, which is a little regrettable.
