Mazda CX-4 Compact SUV Joint Venture Product Review

The Mazda CX-4 concept car, called the Koeru, is produced by FAW Mazda in China and is currently only sold in China. Before the launch of the second-generation CX-5, the CX-4 could be considered Mazda's two-car strategy in China, but now it has lowered the price and differentiated itself from the second-generation CX-5. The CX-4 is a model with a soul-of-motion design, and although it uses the chassis of an SUV, it is actually a closer model to a CUV, which is somewhere between an SUV and a sedan.

In terms of powertrain, the CX-4 has two SKYACTIV engines with 2.0L (PE-VPS) and 2.5L (PY-VPS) engines, and the transmission is mated to Aisin's six-speed automatic transmission, and the lowest model has a manual transmission, but there is almost no production schedule. In terms of drive form, there are front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, the 2.0L model only has front-wheel drive, and the 2.5L model is four-wheel drive, and after the 2018 model year is launched, a low-profile four-wheel drive model has been added, and the price is lower than the top-of-the-line front-wheel drive model.

Mazda's power system can maintain the same character in different models, the shift speed is very fast, the shift is very smooth, the logic is very clear, the only difference is that the engine displacement is different, resulting in a gap in performance, for the power demand is not strong, the 2.0L engine can already meet the daily needs, but the 2.5L model power will indeed be stronger, and the four-wheel drive system will be more calm when dealing with slippery roads.

The handling of the CX-4 is very close to that of the Ankesaila, because the whole body will be closer to the ground than the CX-5, and it will drive more like a sedan than an SUV, but the aspect of shock filtration will be softer than that of Mazda's sedan, because it is an SUV chassis after all, and the suspension travel can be made a little longer. The compression and rebound action of the suspension is very crisp, much more relaxed than Artez, and there is not a lot of suspension action transmitted into the cabin.

As for the field of vision, the CX-4 is limited by the body shape, the left and right vision is not too good, the inclined A-pillar will occupy more of the field of vision, the left and right rearview mirror area is also relatively large, there will be a large blind spot when turning left and right, because the rear of the car is made of a slip-back shape, so the area of the rear windshield is not large.

The CX-4's noise suppression is also relatively average, and at speeds below 60 km/h, tire noise is not too noticeable, and after the speed exceeds 60 km/h, tire noise is transmitted to the cabin. The window glass is also not particularly crafted, and it is not very good at insulating road noise. In order to create a sporty atmosphere, Mazda did not specifically isolate the engine sound, and the sound in the low-rpm range was not obvious, and the engine sound in the high-rpm range was easily transmitted.

Noise and space are both disadvantages of the CX-4, but the space is obviously deducted more points, and as a model positioned as a compact SUV, the rear space is even less than that of many small SUVs, such as the Binzhi and Vitra. Due to the styling of the rear of the car, the CX-4 has very limited headroom in the rear, which can only be mitigated by a more soothing backrest angle, but this results in a lack of legroom and a short seat cushion. Due to the four-wheel drive model, there is a large bulge in the middle of the rear row, and there is no way to sit an adult in the middle of the rear row.
