Hyundai Tucson Compact SUV Joint Venture Product Review

The pedigree of Hyundai Motor's urban SUV is very confusing, it was originally sold in China as a Tucson, and then the ix35 appeared out of thin air, when the Tucson and ix35 were the two names of the second-generation Tucson, and then the new Tucson appeared, which is the third generation, and the fourth-generation Tucson now on sale is the latest model of synchronized overseas models. From the perspective of positioning, the fourth-generation Tucson is the highest, the ix35 is the lowest, and although the ix35 model is the oldest, it has the lowest price and the largest sales.

The powertrain of the fourth-generation Tucson has not changed significantly compared to the previous generation, and it still uses a 1.6T turbocharged engine from the Gamma series, paired with a Dymos seven-speed dry dual-clutch transmission, and a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine and a Pavoltai 6AT will only continue to be used on the ix35. Although the power system has not changed, but the level of power matching has been improved, in daily driving, the shift response is very fast, the action is very gentle, and the power transmission is also very efficient, and the Volkswagen slow shift for smooth strategy is different, but this powertrain in the low-speed stop-and-go road conditions, because the shift is more direct, there will be some hesitation between the switch between the first and second gears, so compared with the AT gearbox, the force is a little less predictable, and there are occasional slight setbacks.

In terms of chassis tuning, the fourth-generation Tucson and Kia's KX5 have opened up a clear gap. Because of the different positioning, the Tucson will be better than the KX5 in terms of creating a sense of luxury, close to the shock filtration quality of Japanese cars in the same class, more decent filtering of large and small vibrations, and better lateral support when changing lanes at high speeds. It is easy to expose the stuffing mainly in some continuous bumpy sections, and the rear suspension will have a more obvious sense of throwing and jumping, and the whole body is not too close to the road.

Four-wheel drive models will only appear in the top configuration, using a set of Genes decentralized HTRAC time-sharing four-wheel drive system, this is not a set of systems specifically for off-road, but the ability to adjust the adhesion of the four wheels on slippery roads will be greatly improved, for cities with a lot of rain and snow, but the top price is 60,000 yuan higher than the next top model, and the sales volume is better than nothing.

Tucson's sound insulation is not too impressive, road noise isolation is relatively good, as long as the engine is not in the high-revving range, it will not be very noisy, the disadvantages are mainly at high speeds The wind noise is more obvious, and the tire noise suppression of the power man tires is more general.

Although the steering is still very light at low speeds, the damping feeling of the angle gain with the speed has been significantly improved, and the electronic feeling is not as obvious as before, and the feeling is very natural.

There aren't a lot of highlights in the interior, but they all have them, including soft slush molding above the dashboard and more hard plastic on the door panels. The position of the buttons is correct, and the air conditioning control panel also uses a physical knob, which is much better than the set of touch controls on the YaKX5. The central control multimedia supports CarLife, but does not support Apple CarPlay, the touch feedback is mainly to look at the animation of the screen to confirm, the whole set of multimedia can be said to be good-looking but not very convenient blind operation.

The Tucson has a modest ride in a compact SUV, not very spacious, but its rear seats have a huge advantage in that the backrest angle is adjustable and the adjustment is not small, so although it is not very spacious, it provides a rear seat that can be "slumped".

In terms of reliability, originally the Tucson only had a certain number of faults on the dry dual-clutch transmission, but there was a recall of the same oil increase as the Kia KX before, and the manufacturer upgraded the ECU instead of a decrease in power and an increase in fuel consumption, resulting in a sharp increase in complaints, which outweighed the losses.

In terms of safety, this generation of Tucson has been replaced in 2015 and received the highest TSP safety rating from the IIHS in 2016 and 2017, and TSP evaluation in 2018 and 2019. It also received a five-star rating from E-NCAP in 2015 and a five-star rating from C-NCAP.
