Jeep Grand Cherokee non-luxury brand mid-to-large SUV product review

The Grand Cherokee currently on sale still belongs to the fourth-generation WK2, which has been on the market in 2011 and is only sold through import channels, and in 2013 it underwent a facelift, replacing the gearbox with an 8AT, and the current model has also corrected the problem of the electronic gear lever, the previous Grand Cherokee's gear lever sometimes looks like it is in P gear, but in fact the shift sensor will fail, causing the vehicle to slip backwards, and the FCA Group has therefore carried out a large-scale recall, and now it is also using the traditional gear lever. The current Grand Cherokee is at least a normal car.

The Grand Cherokee platform is the same as the Mercedes-Benz M (now GLE), which was used earlier than the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and uses the same steel unibody chassis as its predecessor, and uses four-wheel independent suspension, air suspension is standard except for the lowest spec, and Jeep's signature multi-terrain mode electronic selection system.

In terms of power, because the Grand Cherokee is fully imported and sold, there are engine options available abroad, the most common gasoline version is the 3.0L V6 and the 3.6L V6, there are also niche 3.0L diesel, the high-performance SRT uses the 6.4L Hemi V8 engine, and the Trackhawk uses the 6.2L Hemi engine, these two versions are quite rare, and most of them are sold through parallel imports.

The gearbox used by the Grand Cherokee is ZF's 8AT, which is worse than the BMW 3 Series that uses ZF 8AT in the early stage, and the shift logic will be more confusing, and the operation of the previous set of electronic gear levers is also very troublesome. After the mid-term facelift, due to the use of the traditional gear lever, the logic of the gearbox has also improved, and the smoothness and power response of daily driving have become much better, but the 3.6L self-priming version has a poor re-acceleration ability above 80km/h, and there will be no push back feeling no matter how you step on the accelerator.

Although the Grand Cherokee seems to have a lot of off-road functions, in fact, the air suspension is not suitable for long-term off-road, positioning is an urban SUV, the entire chassis tuning is soft, its own weight is relatively large, and you will find that the support is not bad when cornering, and the roll of the body is not serious.

The sound insulation in the driving is praised, there is almost no tire noise, but the wind noise will be more obvious at a considerable speed, and when accelerating sharply, the power of the engine is relatively gentle, but the noise is relatively large.

The interior of the Grand Cherokee is relatively monotonous, although a lot of leather materials are used, but the whole body is dark, which will pull down the sense of grade a little. The occupants have good seating space and ride comfort, because the Grand Chernoki itself has a lot of space, but only 5 seats are made, and the space in the front and rear rows is very sufficient, and the seats are also very supportive. The boot space is very large, and the rear seats can be reclined and the trunk floor has metal strips to make it easy to move heavy loads.

The reliability of the Grand Cherokee has always been poor, and the American Jeep is more rugged, with more minor problems with the gearbox and air conditioning, and the electronic systems in the car often fail, which is why we don't recommend driving the Grand Cherokee off-road, it really doesn't know when it will break down.

In the IIHS crash test, in 2013~2017, the Jeep Grand Cherokee's frontal moderate overlap collision, side impact, top impact, headrest and seat scores were excellent, but the more stringent frontal small-angle overlap collision performance was only "average", and the performance of the forward collision warning system only reached the "basic" level, which did not meet the highest safety standards of the IIHS.
