Land Rover Discovery Luxury Brand Mid to Large SUV Product Review

The first generation of Land Rover was born in 1989, when it was still a British brand, called the Discovery Series I, and the company's internal code name was "Project Jay", which was actually a work of combining the Range Rover chassis with a Leyland truck, and then slightly modified. By the 1998 Series II, Land Rover had been transferred to BMW, and even the powertrain had not changed, plus a bunch of electronic systems were considered a facelift, but it still belonged to the first generation of models, and it also established the tradition of Land Rover's "special electronic systems".

When it came to the Discovery 3, Land Rover became Ford's brand again, called LR3 in the United States. The Discovery series has undergone a huge change since the Discovery 3, from the previous competitors of Toyota and Mitsubishi to a mid-to-large luxury SUV, which is in the same class as Mercedes-Benz M and BMW X5. In 2009, the Discovery 4 (LR4) was launched, with only minor changes to the Discovery 3, so it was the second generation of the same model as the Discovery 3, and the Land Rover was also transferred to TATA India.

Launched in 2017, the Discovery 5 is technically the third generation model, and it is a very disruptive model. Discovery 5 changed the previous non-load-bearing body structure to a load-bearing body, the proportion of aluminum used in the entire body reached 80%, the weight of the car was reduced by 480kg compared with the previous generation, and the curb weight was 2.2 tons, which was average in the same class, slightly heavier than the RX, and similar to the Q7. In terms of appearance, the Discovery 5 has been very controversial, although the stepped roof is retained, but the entire body line has become more rounded, which is very similar to the Discovery Shenxing, but the body is relatively wide, which can be distinguished from the size.

The Discovery 5 has only one Si6 3.0L V6 supercharged engine in China, and in other regions there is an SD42.0L diesel engine and a 3.0L V6 turbo diesel engine for HSE. The gearbox is a ZF 8AT, which greatly contributes to the car's performance on the road. In terms of handling, the Discovery 5 is one of Land Rover's relatively successful SUVs in recent years, thanks to the load-bearing body and significant weight reduction. The optimized electronic four-wheel drive system does improve the road adaptability of the vehicle a lot, but the air suspension that is standard in the whole system, the overall tuning is soft, and the body shakes more obviously in daily driving, especially in the rear seat.

It was found that 5 has a 5-seater model and a 7-seater model, the seats of the seven-seater model are full-size, and among the seven-seater SUVs, "human rights" are well protected, and there is always a contradiction between the seven-seat and the trunk space, and it is impossible to have both, but the second and third rows of the Discovery 5 support electric reclining, and you can also put down a seat alone. Like all Land Rover models, it is found that there are no highlights in terms of comfort, the C-pillar is more shaded by light, and the shadow in the cabin is still very large, although the ride space is very spacious, but the comfort of long-distance travel is not high. Features such as Land Rover's all-terrain feedback system and parking sensors are one of the few advantages of Land Rover, which is more useful than the Volvo XC90, but far less than the latter in terms of screen resolution and handling feedback.

Consumer Reports does not yet have a comprehensive count on the reliability of the Land Rover Discovery, but gives a reliability prediction of 1 out of 5. As far as other models are concerned, the quality of the Land Rover has been sluggish, for example, the Discovery 5 is equipped with a bracelet that allows you to put the car key in the car and use the bracelet to open the door with the "D" on the rear of the car, but the probability of this device not being low is not low. According to a survey by the famous British car magazine "Auto Express", the drive system and power system of the Land Rover Discovery 4 are the components with the highest failure rate.

The Land Rover Discovery safety package has been upgraded to include six airbags, electronic stability control, side blind spot monitoring, lane departure system, lane keeping system and automatic following system, all of which are standard, and should be more reassuring to drive on city roads where there are no big winds or waves.
