Volvo XC90 luxury brand mid-size and large-sized SUV product review

Volvo has long been synonymous with luxury and safety, but due to the "aging" of its models, its market share fell sharply and it was eventually acquired by Geely. For the new generation XC90, Volvo said that its emergence is to compete for the young consumer market. As a result, Volvo has drastically changed the styling of the XC90 and offers a range of advanced safety packages.

The Volvo XC90's steering feedback is more responsive, and the gearbox's output during the hard acceleration phase is also linear, with the T5 version accelerating from zero to 100 in 7.9 seconds, which is in the upper middle range for a mid-to-large SUV, while the more powerful T6 is 6.5 seconds and the hybrid T8 version is 5.6 seconds. When cruising the engine, the breathing rate of the engine is very uneven, and in dynamic mode, it is difficult to feel more "dynamic" changes, except for the heavier steering and the more unstable engine. The Volvo XC90's fuel efficiency is not too far behind the Acura MDX, and fuel economy is one of the XC90's highlights, but overall, the Volvo XC90 offers far less driving pleasure than the latter.

Volvo's suspension tuning is generally stiff, and the XC90 is no exception. Its suspension transmits almost every bump into the car, and the optional air suspension makes the driving experience more comfortable, but the tires are too wide to allow the air suspension to take full advantage. The Volvo's front seats are wide, and the equally wide windows free up a lot of viewing space. The third row of seats can also only seat children, but the cushions are too low, allowing the knees to be too close to their chins, which can be a hidden danger in an emergency. The improved SENSUS multimedia system displays data clearly and the feedback is good, but the number of pages is still redundant. Volvo has added technological features to the XC90, such as an automatic start-stop system, but the system takes a long time to restart, often embarrassing drivers waiting for a red light.

In terms of reliability, since the latest Volvo XC90 has just been on the market and has not yet had a large-scale breakdown, Consumer Reports has not been able to calculate its long-term failure rate, but based on the performance of the first-generation XC90, Consumer Reports has made a prediction of the reliability of the XC90 - the worst.

The safety performance of the XC90 is still worth affirming. In 2007.2008.2009.2010.2011.2014, the model received the highest safety level TSP of the same type of vehicle in the IIHS. TSP obtained on 2012.2013.2015.2016 after adding Active Safety System. In 2017, the IIHS raised the bar for top-of-the-line safety models, and was only awarded the TSP due to substandard lights.
