Mercedes-Benz GLC luxury brand midsize SUV product review

The predecessor of the GLC was the GLK, but later because Mercedes-Benz reorganized the spectrum, the GLK was replaced by the GLC, and the engine was shared with the C-class. The GLC was introduced a little later than both the GLA and the GLE, and according to the name, the GLC is the equivalent of the C-Class in Mercedes-Benz's SUV family tree.

GLC as the successor model of GLK, the appearance and GLK are completely two styles, GLK's lines are straighter, GLC because of the close relationship with C Class, so in terms of appearance, you can also see the shadow of C-class, the lines are also much rounder, this design can be understood as a nesting doll, can also be said to be a family design.

In the 2019 facelift, Beijing Benz launched the GLC L, which is the long-axle version. Compared with the standard axle version, the wheelbase of the long axle version has been lengthened from 2873mm to 2973mm, the body length has increased from 4661mm to 4765mm, and the wheelbase and body length are about 10 cm, which is not too large, and the impact on the driving feeling is difficult to reflect. This part of the length is added to the rear seat space, which will greatly improve the legroom for rear passengers.

The long-axle version is also different from the standard axle version in terms of powertrain, with only the 200 and 260 left for the standard axle version, while the most powerful 300 will only be available in the long-axle version. Because the previous sales of the standard shaft version of the 300 have always been very average, after the launch of the long-axis version, putting the 300 on the long-axis version will not actually increase the sales of the 300, but only a symbolic configuration.

All models of the domestic GLC use a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, codenamed M274, paired with Mercedes-Benz's 9G-Tronic

The automatic manual transmission is divided into three levels according to the output of the engine, which are 200 with 184 hp, 260 with 211 hp and 300 with 245 hp, with a minimum power of 200, acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, 260 in 7.8 seconds, and 300 with high power in 6.9 seconds. In other countries and regions, there is also a diesel version, and the GLC also has a high-performance version of AMG, which is divided into 43 and 63, 63 S.

This generation of GLC uses the 9G-Tronic, and it inevitably has the same problem, that is, the gear ratio between low-speed gears is relatively open, and when slowing down and downshifting in front of the traffic light, there will be frustration in the process of 3-2-1, but the degree will vary between different individuals.

Although the GLC is equipped with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard, it is a fairly good SUV with passability. Excellent torsional rigidity and high-speed cruising feeling are the advantages of GLC, GLC's central differential mechanism is a two-plate clutch, the front and rear axles are open differentials between the wheels, and the inter-wheel limited slip relies on the 4ETS electronic limited slip system, and the power distribution is 45:55 front and rear in daily driving. The standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive and high ground clearance allow it to maintain good stability even on bad roads. However, in terms of steering, the GLC still doesn't feel as good as the Porsche Macan, and there will be noticeable shaking at the start.

GLC's suspension tuning is stiff, in the process of driving, the road surface information is relatively rich, and the support performance is very good when cornering, but when encountering speed bumps or ditches, the performance of the suspension is very confused, there will be obvious bumps when passing at low speeds, which makes people feel dizzy, and the impact of the shock absorber can be heard at high speed, in general, GLC's chassis tuning lacks a sense of luxury.

A very important reason why the GLC is an upgraded version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is that the cabin design is basically directly copied from the C-Class. At present, the new Mercedes-Benz has used a large through-type touch screen, which has a very strong sense of technology and luxury, compared to the GLC and C-class with the previous generation Command system. The low-end model will use piano paint, a standard fingerprint collector, and the wood grain trim on the high-end model has a good texture, but only 300 has it.

The GLC's sound insulation effect is good, the support of the front seats is also soft and comfortable, and the long axle version has become more spacious in the rear after the wheelbase has been extended, at least reaching the average level of the same class, and the standard axle version is below the average level.

Mercedes-Benz GLC's performance in terms of quality can not stand the test of time, in 2017, according to the statistics of the "Consumer Reports", the first year of the GLC had almost no problems, but in 2018, the two-year-old GLC failure rate has increased significantly, including the electronic equipment in the car, braking system and other parts, the reliability is only medium to low, so the "Consumer Reports" for the 2018 GLC also only gave a 1 point of reliability expectations (out of 5). There have also been a large number of complaints about the brake system in the domestic GLC, the main problem is the abnormal brake noise, and it will not improve after repair.

All GLCs are equipped with Electronic Stability Control, Cornering Assist and Forward Collision Warning, while more advanced safety features include Merge Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. In 2018, the Mercedes-Benz GLC participated in the frontal moderate overlap collision, frontal small-angle overlap collision, side impact, headrest and seat tests, and the results were all "excellent", meeting the highest safety standards, and won the TSP award from IIHS. In the NCAP of Europe and Australia, the Mercedes-Benz GLC has won a 5-star safety rating.
