Volvo XC60 luxury brand midsize SUV product review

The first-generation XC60 has been sold from 2008 to 2017, has been Volvo's best-selling model, even if the second-generation model is on the market, the first-generation XC60 also has a lot of inventory, it is a very long-lived model, although there has been a facelift during the period, but the overall change is not much, it was a fashionable design in the year, as well as the traditional P3 chassis, the simple central control has fallen behind the times, so the previous generation XC60 gives people the feeling of conservative, even old-fashioned.

The second-generation XC60 is the first replacement model after Volvo was acquired by Geely, using the same SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform as the S90, V90, and XC90, with a wheelbase 90 mm longer, a body length of 44 mm, an increase in width of 11 mm, and a height reduction of 55 mm. The exterior was designed by Thomas Ingenlath, and the overall design is still Nordic style, with many elements similar to the XC90, without large areas of chrome, simple and low-key, but naturally exuding a sense of luxury. This generation of XC60 headlamps has added the design of "Thor's hammer", the shape of the taillights is called "Viking Axe", and the changes in the measurements and lamps give people a very modern but still very "Volvo" feeling.

This generation XC60 is available in different countries and regions with different powertrains, divided into petrol and diesel, both with 2.0 inline-four engines. The diesel version is divided into D4 and D5 versions, and the gasoline version is divided into T4, T5, and T6 versions, with only the T4 and T5 versions sold in China, while the T4 version is exclusively supplied to China, and the hybrid version is T8.

There is only one T4 version sold in China, front-wheel drive, equipped with a B4204T44 engine, which is actually a low-power version of the T5, with only 190 horsepower, which plays a role in lowering the overall price, and the configuration is very low, which is not very recommended. The larger sales volume is the four-wheel drive T5, because the second-generation XC60 T5 version is all four-wheel drive, and there is not even a front-wheel drive model in some parts of the country.

The T5 version imported and produced in China is equipped with a B4204T23 engine with a maximum horsepower of 254 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Nm, while the previous generation XC60 is equipped with a B4204T11 with a maximum horsepower of 245 hp and the same maximum torque. Since the latter part of the previous generation, the XC60 has been switched to the 8AT gearbox of the Aisin transverse platform, and by the second generation, the XC60 has inherited this set of transmissions with a good reputation. 2.0T with 8AT powertrain, the official 000 acceleration time is 6.8 seconds, and the American consumer report 0-96 km/h is 8 seconds, for an SUV of more than 1.8 tons, the 8-second breakthrough is beyond the category of "enough", which can be regarded as excellent.

The XC60 sold abroad has a T6 version, although it is a 2.0 displacement, but the B4204T29 and B4204T27 are turbocharged and mechanical, both of which can make more than 300 horsepower. The hybrid version is called the T8, and it also has two engine models, B4204T28 and B4204T35, and is also turbomechanical twin-supercharged, but it is driven by an 86 hp electric motor at the rear wheels, so some sources will say 407 hp, pretending to be the strongest 2.0T on the surface.

Aisin's 8AT reputation has always been very good, to this generation of XC60, although the gear shift is still smooth, but the initial throttle adjustment seems to be a little slow response, before reaching the torque platform, its power is not too obvious output, only when it reaches the corresponding speed, it will have a smooth feeling, and the follow-up power will have a good continuity, this adjustment can be seen as sluggish, it can also be said to take care of the smoothness of low-speed driving. Volvo has never been selling on handling and power, so that's something to consider when choosing a Volvo.

The chassis of this generation XC60 cannot be generalized, the reason is that although the SPA chassis is used, the new suspension structure is used, the front is a double wishbone, and the rear is a multi-link, but it can be optionally air-suspension. On the model without optional air suspension, even if the unsprung mass is reduced with aluminum alloy parts, but the shock filter is still very Volvo characteristics, when passing some bumpy roads, you can clearly feel that the suspension is hard, and the driving quality is obviously worse than the same level of models, it is said that this adjustment is because Sweden even the mountain roads are particularly smooth. However, after the optional air suspension, when passing over potholes, the suspension will have a flexible feeling, and the ride quality will be improved a lot.

The optional air suspension is not only an improvement in shock filtration, but also brings driving quality and convenience for everyday use. Models equipped with air suspension will vary in height depending on the driving mode, reducing the drag at high speeds and raising the vehicle to the maximum in off-road mode. Because the air suspension is paired with electronic suspension, it is better to resist roll when you corner. In terms of daily use, if it is equipped with air suspension, then when getting on and off the car, the body will be lowered by about 4 cm, and when the trunk is opened, the body height can also be lowered by about 5 cm with one click, which is very practical.

There is no big problem with the space and ride in the car, because the wheelbase is elongated, so the space in the rear row is more abundant both for the head and legs, but it is not too bright in the same class, and the ergonomics of the seat also continues the fine tradition of Volvo, whether it is the shape or material of the seat, it is more excellent, and the style and long-distance comfort are guaranteed. It is worth noting that the seat in the center of the rear row, due to the four-wheel drive model, the middle platform bulge is higher, coupled with the rear exhaust air vent, so the ride in the middle position is not too comfortable.

The sound insulation of the cabin is very good in terms of road noise and wind noise, but the biggest problem comes from the sound insulation of the engine, although it has been improved compared with the previous generation of models, but because it is a four-cylinder turbo engine, the sound of the engine is not beautiful, so when the speed is up, as long as the sound comes in, it has a kind of irritability, and there is no advantage in the same class of models.

When it comes to safety, it's normal to think of Volvo. The second-generation XC60 received a 5-star rating on the IIHS and a TSP award, also a 5-star rating on the E-NCAP, and a current highest score of 98 in the adult occupant safety category, and also the highest 95 points in the safety assistance category after the standard City Safety safety system, in other words, the XC60 is currently the safest SUV on the E-NCAP list.

In terms of reliability, due to the use of a new platform and the introduction of domestic production, in many respects the previous generation model cannot be used as a reference, but American consumer reports give a reliability estimate, and the XC60 has a score of 2 out of 5, which is also behind the Q5 and Macan in its class.
