The National Museum of China, referred to as the National Museum, is located on the east side of Tiananmen Square in downtown Beijing, south of East Chang'an Avenue, and the Great Hall of the People from east to west. It is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China.

History

On July 9, 1912, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China Government decided to set up the Preparatory Office of the National History Museum, with Guozijian as the site.

In July 1918, the museum was relocated to the Duanmen and Wumen of the Forbidden City.

In November 1920, the National Museum of History was officially established.

In October 1926, the museum was officially opened.

In October 1949, it was renamed the National Beijing History Museum and was subordinate to the Ministry of Culture of the Central People's Government.

In March 1950, the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum of the Revolution was established. It was located in Beihai Tuancheng, and soon moved into the Wuying Hall of Xihua Gate of the Forbidden City.

In October 1958, a new museum was built on the east side of Tiananmen Square, and the project was completed in August 1959, becoming one of the top ten buildings for the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In October 1959, the "General History of China Exhibition" was publicly previewed.

In August 1960, the "Beijing History Museum" was renamed the "Chinese History Museum", and the "Central Revolution Museum" was renamed the "Chinese Revolution Museum".

In September 1969, the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution merged to form the Museum of the History of the Chinese Revolution.

At the beginning of 1983, it was set up as the Chinese History Museum and the Chinese Revolution Museum.

In February 2003, the National Museum of China was formally established on the basis of the Chinese History Museum and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.

In March 2007, the renovation and expansion project of the National Museum of China officially started.

In December 2010, the renovation and expansion project of the National Museum of China was completed.

In March 2011, the new National Museum of China was opened.

On July 9, 2012, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Museum of China was held at the National Museum Theater.
